Description:
WHAT IS A BEER MATCH AND WHAT WAS IT INVENTED FOR
A beer mat (German: Bierdeckel) is a special coaster for a beer glass or mug, made of thick cardboard. The main purpose is to protect the table surface from condensation and spilled drinks, as well as to prevent the dishes from slipping.
Beer mats originally appeared in Germany in the 19th century as a means of protecting beer from contamination when drinking outdoors. The name comes from the German words “Bier” (beer) and “Deckel” (lid), which literally means “beer lid”. At that time, wealthy people used mugs with metal lids, pewter and silver, and less wealthy people used reusable felt mats, which served as lids for beer outdoors and coasters indoors. But in 1892, the German Robert Sputh suggested using pressed cardboard for this. This option turned out to be not only cheaper, but also more convenient - it could be used as a coaster that absorbed moisture. Over time, beer coasters have become not only a functional accessory, but also an advertising medium. Today, they are used in bars, restaurants, and breweries around the world, and their design plays an important role in branding drinks and establishments.
BEER MAT, BEER COAT, AND FIRE: THE DIFFERENCE
Despite their similar purpose, a beer mat, beer coaster, and fire pit are not the same thing. The main difference between them lies in the materials and area of application
A beer mat is a classic paper beer mat. It is used to protect tables from moisture and as an advertising medium.
A fire pit is a general name for all types of drink coasters, including plastic, wooden, leather, and silicone. In the bar industry, beer coasters are sometimes called fire pits, but in a broader sense, a fire pit can be made of more than just cardboard.
A beer mat is a large rubberized coaster that is placed on a bar counter. It prevents glasses from slipping, collects drops, and protects the surface. Most often it is made of PVC or silicone.
Thus, a beer coaster is a type of coaster, and a beer mat is a more functional accessory for the bar area.
