Description:
Rotary Engine is a star-shaped air-cooled engine based on the rotation of cylinders (usually presented in odd numbers) together with a crankcase and an air screw around a fixed crankshaft mounted on a motor frame. The world's first serial aircraft rotary engines were developed in 1908 by Louis Seguin and his brother Laurent Seguin from the French company Gnome (Fr. Société des Moteurs Gnome, SMG). Similar engines were widely used during the First World War. Rotary engines exceeded water cooling engines in terms of power per unit mass, so they were mainly used in fighters and reconnaissance aircraft.<br> Also, rotary engines were distinguished by a high oil flow rate, which was supplied directly to the cylinders and, having fulfilled its functions, was removed with waste gases, not completely burned. Due to the oncoming flow of air, unburned oil settled on the fuselage of the aircraft.
